Russian Ministry of Environment Develops Strategy for Antarctic Until 2030

Russia’s Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment developed a draft Strategy of development Russia’s activities in Antarctica for the next 10 years. In particular, it implies increased funding of investment projects from the federal budget, the Ministry’s press service announced Wednesday, TASS informs.

“The Strategy defines main aims, goals and directions of Russia’s activities in Antarctica for the next 10 years. […] The document involves increased funding of the Russian Antarctic Expedition from the federal budget; implementation of investment projects on construction and equipment of residential and service complexes at the Russian stations; and development of complex scientific research,” the press service said.

The draft Strategy is expected to be reviewed by the government this year.

Year 2020 marks the 200th anniversary of discovery of Antarctic, by the Bellinshausen and Lazarev expedition. The anniversary events began in January at the Bellinshausen station and will last for the entire year.
