Rostelecom Considers Biometric Palm Identification

Rostelecom is exploring the possibility of biometric identification for servicing at banks and receiving other services for drawing veins in the palm, Rostelecom’s Ivan Berov said, as reported by RIA Novosti.

The plan is that identification by the palm will complement the already used signs – the image of the face and voice, he explained.

Russian banks began a centralized collection of customer biometric data in July 2018. According to the information letter published on the regulator’s website, by the end of 2019, such a service was supposed to be provided in all structural divisions of the bank in each region of presence, but then the Central Bank made a number of concessions, in particular for credit organizations with a basic license.

“A person will give up his face and palm, for example, or his voice and palm. After that, he will have the opportunity to use biometrics to obtain an electronic signature key or identification. This has not been entered yet, we are now discussing with the State Duma how to do this,” said Berov.

When asked by a journalist how the service using biometrics could become accessible for people with disabilities, Berov replied that bank representatives could go to the client to enter his data into a single system.

“Tinkoff, Alfa-Bank, Sberbank – will now do field registration,” he added.
