Russian Banks Take Up 10% of Global Card Payments Market

Russian banks occupied almost 10% of the global banking transactions market, and the Mir payment system is recognized in the international banking community, a study from Nilson Report showed, Russian media inform.

There are 89 brands worldwide that are dedicated to the domestic market only. The Mir payment system, created in 2015, was included in the list of the largest ones, including RuPay (India); Star, Pulse, Nyce, and Accel (USA); Cartes Bancaires (France) and Interac (Canada).

By December 31, 2026, it is projected that there will be 31.44 billion credit, debit, and prepaid payment cards in circulation worldwide, general-purpose and private labels.

Domestic-only branded cards are growing faster than global brands and are projected to reach 2.58 billion worldwide by the end of 2026.

UnionPay, Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, JCB, American Express, and Discover / Diners Club are global brands. They are expected to have issued 19.74 billion cards by the end of 2026.

According to forecasts, by 2026, cards from global brands will account for 62.77% of all payment cards in circulation in the world. The brand rating for all payment cards in circulation will not change from 2021.

UnionPay cards are expected to come out on top with a 36.35% share, followed by Visa (13.78%), Mastercard (10.28%), Maestro (1.11%), JCB (0.59%) , American Express (0.43%) and Discover / Diners Club (0.24%).
