South Korean electronics giant Samsung has announced the opening of an artificial intelligence center in Moscow next week, along with similar facilities in the UK and Canada, RIA news agency reported.
The Moscow center, due to be opened on May 29, will mark the first such expanding of the company’s work in the AI field to Russia, the report said.
The three centers will join Samsung’s U.S. and Seoul, Korea-based AI facilities. The company also announced plans to have 1,000 AI Experts working for Samsung Research, the company’s division that focuses on its work in AI, by 2020.
The move is the latest in Samsung’s big push for artificial intelligence across its products, most recently seen by its Bixby personal assistant included in the Galaxy S9 phone. Samsung plans to include the assistant across its product line, including in televisions and refrigerators.
The Moscow center will capitalize on Russia’s expertise in fundamental sciences such as mathematics and physics, the company said. The Russian facility will employ experts in this field to lead the research of artificial intelligence algorithms, including Professor Dmitri Vetrov of the Higher School of Economics and Professor Viktor Lempitsky of the Skolkovo Institute of Science.
Earlier, the South Korean company introduced similar centers in Seoul in November 2017 and in the Silicon Valley in January 2018.
Samsung Electronics is one of the world’s leading international electronics manufacturing companies, producing semiconductors, telecommunications equipment, memory chips, liquid crystal displays, mobile phones and monitors.
