Putin: Kuzbass Can Become the Center of the New Economy of Western Siberia

Kuzbass has a huge potential for development as a powerful industrial complex and the center of the new economy of Western Siberia and all of Russia, Russian President Vladimir Putin said during the ceremony in honor of the 300th anniversary of Kuzbass, local media reported.

Putin recalled that in March of this year, the Russian government, together with the authorities of the Kemerovo region, adopted a program for the socio-economic development of Kuzbass until 2024.

This program is based on projects and initiatives that will bring tangible benefits to residents, and it will be fully implemented, Putin said.

The priority of the socio-economic development of Kuzbass is the construction and repair of highways, including bypassing Kemerovo, as well as the renewal of the public transport system and engineering networks.

The head of state noted that changes for the better are possible only with the active participation of residents of the region. Thanks to the miner’s hardening, directness, miner’s courage, the desire to achieve record results, those qualities that are highly valued by the inhabitants of Kuzbass, give confidence that together we will achieve our goals, Putin stressed.

The program for the socio-economic development of Kuzbass was approved by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin in March 2021.

According to the Ministry of Economic Development of the Russian Federation, 55 billion rubles will be spent on this program, including about 51 billion rubles from the federal budget. The implementation of this program will create 13,000 new jobs in non-resource sectors and diversify the region’s economy.

The development of tourism should become one of the directions for the diversification of the regional economy. The program also includes the development of the Sheregesh ski resort in the south of Kuzbass.
