U.S.-based global fast-food chain Subway opened its first restaurant in the city of Tarko-Sale, a city of 22,000 inhabitants in Russia’s Far North Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District last month, New Retail reports.
“For local residents, this is a real event. There is no major brand here. And in general, the restaurant sphere is still underdeveloped in the city. Therefore, Subway in Tarko-Sale can well become not only a place to attract fashionable youth but also a family restaurant,” said Roman Berestovsky, a Subway franchisee.
The restaurant is located in the center of Tarko-Sale.
“I grew up in this city and in my childhood, there was a pastry shop in the building, then a cafe named Fortuna”, Berestovsky said. The place for Subway has already inherited a legendary history,” the restaurant owner added. For him, this is the 16th Subway restaurant, with his other franchises located in Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Tobolsk, Barnaul, Nizhnevartovsk.
According to 2018 data, there are more than 44,000 Subway establishments operating globally — the famous Sub is served in 112 countries from Zambia to Afghanistan, and about 300–500 thousand people work in franchise restaurants.
In Russia, Subway made its debut in 1994 in St. Petersburg. The network has grown steadily, and today its institutions are in all regions of the country. In April this year, the company opened the first in Russia and the largest restaurant in the world in the concept of Fresh Forward, in St. Petersburg. The concept implies a fresh corporate identity and interior design, a digital menu and a new presentation of sandwiches and salads.
