Prices in Europe Skyrocket after Gazprom’s Decision

Gazprom Export has stopped selling gas for 2022 on its electronic platform, a decision made an hour after a German court issued a ruling on the Nord Stream 2 project, Russian media reported.

As reported by Bloomberg, the last contract for the first quarter of 2022 was sold on August 23, and in the next two days, only contracts for 2023 were sold.

The contract changes came an hour after a German court issued a ruling on the Nord Stream 2 project. The court refused to exempt the gas pipeline from the norms of the EU gas directive, which may affect the timing of the start-up of the gas pipeline.

On Friday evening, August 27, the gas price on the European market exceeded USD 580 per thousand cubic meters. That’s more than 6 percent more than Thursday’s close.

Earlier on August 27, the head of Gazprom, Alexei Miller, met with the head of the Austrian company OMV Rainer Seele. Following the meeting, Gazprom announced that the Nord Stream 2 project is at the final stage of implementation.
