A Bulgarian embassy staffer has been deemed persona non grata by Russia, according to a statement released by the Russian Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.

The Russian Foreign Ministry invited Bulgarian Ambassador Atanas Krystin to provide him with a memo designating a Bulgarian embassy official persona non grata on May 26, according to the statement.

The measure comes as a response to Bulgaria’s irrational decision in April to label a Russian ambassador persona non grata, the Russian Foreign Ministry noted.

A Russian diplomat was expelled from Bulgaria on April 29, according to the Bulgarian Foreign Ministry. Prosecutors accused six Russians of being engaged in various explosions at Bulgarian arms depots containing ammunition belonging to weapons merchant Emilian Gebrev’s EMCO firm between 2011 and 2020, as well as a murder attempt on Gebrev, according to Bulgarian officials.
