Russian Railways (RZD) began construction of a new branch line to connect with Sheremetyevo Airport’s Northern Terminal Complex (STK) with terminals B and C, which are under construction, Rail Journal reported.
The project will be implemented in two stages, with stage 1 involving the construction of the Sheremetyevo-1 station in the STK with three tracks and two platforms, a 3km double track line and a single-track branch that will connect the new station with the existing Sheremetyevo-2 station located in the South terminal complex (UTK).
The first phase, which is expected to be completed by 2022, will enable the launch of a shuttle service from UTK to STK.
Stage 2 will continue the construction of a double-track line from the Sheremetyevo-1 station towards Sheremetyevskaya Savelovsky station, which will connect with existing lines towards central Moscow, Rail Journal added.
When completed, the project will increase capacity at the airport from 38 to 72 train pairs per day, with services operating from Moscow every 15 minutes.
