Russia’s MiG-31 intercepted U.S. RC-135 reconnaissance plane over the Bering Sea, the national defense control center said Friday, Sputnik reported.

According to the center, MiG-31 escorted the U.S. plane until it was far enough away from the Russian border.

Earlier in October, MiG-31 and Su-35 escorted two Rockwell B-1 Lancer bombers.

NATO aircraft have intensified reconnaissance activities near the Russian border over the past months. Moscow has warned that such regular flights by U.S. and NATO aircraft near Russia’s border poses the risk of accidental escalation.
