UN Secretary-General Applauds Russian-American Weapons Control Discussion

On the 76th anniversary of the US atomic bombing of Nagasaki, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres hailed Russia and the United States’ desire for weapons control talks, TASS reports.

“I applaud the United States’ and Russian Federation’s reaffirmation that a nuclear war cannot be won and must never be waged, as well as their resolve to engage in arms control discussion,” he said.

“We continue to dwell in the shadow of the mushroom cloud,” he said, 76 years after the bombing of Nagasaki. “Prospects for the use of nuclear weapons remain as hazardous as at any point since the height of the Cold War,” he said.

“I urge all Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty parties to use the upcoming Tenth Review Conference to strengthen the norm against nuclear weapons and take efforts toward their eradication,” Guterres continued.

On August 6, 1945, the United States launched a four-tonne uranium bomb on Hiroshima, nicknamed Little Boy. At least 70,000 individuals were murdered instantaneously as a result of the blast.

On August 9, 1945, another bomb was detonated on Nagasaki, killing 70,000 people and razing the city to the ground. Over the last year, about 3,000 persons who survived the US atomic bombs have perished in Japan, bringing the overall number of casualties to 189,000.
