The Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs is ready to introduce electronic passports in the country. Valentina Kazakova, head of the Main Directorate for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia, announced at a press conference at the Izvestia Information Center on September 29.
“We know what it looks like, we know how it will be made.The Ministry of Internal Affairs is ready for this, ”Kazakova said.
Kazakova noted that a response is currently expected from other departments, including the Ministry of Finance.
“The Ministry of Internal Affairs is ready to solve any question raised by the government, the President of the Russian Federation, but in this case we are waiting for an answer from our colleagues who are engaged in the digitalization of the Russian Federation, this is the Ministry of Digital Industry,” Kazakova said.
The head of the Main Directorate for Migration Issues of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia emphasized that the key goal is not just to issue a document, but to make it convenient for every citizen of the country to use it.
Earlier in September, it was noted that the introduction of electronic identity cards as part of a pilot project in Moscow is planned for the end of 2021. The passports with electronic media will be issued on a voluntary basis to citizens of the Russian Federation, starting from the age of 14.
In April, the Ministry of Internal Affairs disclosed the details of the mechanism for issuing new passports to Russian citizens in the form of a card with an electronic chip (PEN).
The department said that the Russian government instructed to organize the issuance of PEN on the territory of Moscow starting from December 1, 2021. At the same time, it was noted that replacing a paper passport with a smart card would not be mandatory.
In May, the Ministry of Digital Affairs published a bill, according to which it is planned to launch a mechanism for citizens and authorities to receive electronic duplicates of documents created in the centers of public services “My Documents” (MFC) on the basis of paper documents.
The issuance of documents in the regions of the Russia will be carried out as soon as they are technically ready, but no later than July 1, 2023.
